Schools Beyond Screens—Eanes ISD

Better learning. Fewer distractions. Intentional technology.

We are not anti-tech. We are pro-learning. We're calling for human-first, evidence-based and age-appropriate technology in Eanes ISD.

What We're Asking For

We’re Eanes ISD parents, caregivers, and educators who believe students learn best through human connection and hands-on, real-world experience. Technology should support that, not replace it.

We want students to build deep, flexible knowledge that doesn’t depend on any one tool, so they can thrive with every tool.

Analog-First Learning

Make reading, writing, play, movement, conversation, and hands-on learning the default. Use technology when it offers a clear instructional benefit.

Age-Appropriate Limits

Keep devices out of grades K-2, replace 1:1 devices with shared ones in grades 3–8, set screen-time limits by grade, and keep lunch, recess, and free time screen-free.

Guardrails for AI and Online Content

Pause student use of generative AI until age-based guidelines are established and it's supported by independent research. Block YouTube, social media and gaming on school devices.

Transparency & Accountability

Give families greater visibility into how technology and AI are used in classrooms, and let them opt out where low-tech options exist. Independently evaluate every EdTech product for effectiveness, safety, privacy and developmental impact.

Technology Education

Teach students to use technology wisely: practical skills like typing, healthy habits, and literacy in AI, online safety, data privacy, and misinformation.

Why This Matters

Research increasingly shows that screen-based instruction doesn’t outperform traditional teaching, and that too much of it can harm learning and development.

The stakes go beyond attention spans. Heavy screen use can undercut memory, deep understanding and complex thinking. Across countries, declining test scores have closely tracked the spread of devices in classrooms.

Meanwhile, research supports that handwriting, print reading, discussion and other active, hands-on methods are superior for learning.

"Gen Z is the first generation in modern history to underperform us on basically every cognitive measure we have."
