On June 23rd 2026, LAUSD approved a historic new tech policy that limits screen time in all grades and bans device use in TK-1. We are asking LISD to match or exceed LAUSD's policy. Read the full policy and SBS statement here.

What We Are Asking

Eliminate device use in TK-2nd grade

Eliminate 1:1 device use for grades 3 - 8, with limited device use on a computer cart or computer lab model as is deemed curriculum appropriate

Prohibit student-led use of YouTube and other gaming, video streaming, and social media platforms

Provide maximum daily and weekly screen time limits for grades 2-12, including 0-60 mins per subject per week for Middle School and 0-90 minutes for High School (which includes classroom, homework, Google Classroom, etc.)

Prohibit student digital devices during lunch, recess, and passing periods in most grade levels

Default to no take-home devices for any grade level

Eliminate the use of screens in Physical Education (PE)

Define educational use of digital materials and prohibiting non-educational digital content

Prohibit screen time from being used as a reward, incentive, or behavioral reinforcement for students

Provide transparency for parents and guardians on time spent on devices and apps and websites accessed

Require all EdTech products to meet independent standards for efficacy, and to prove that any benefits outweigh potential risks

Allow parents and guardians to opt out of specific EdTech services & applications, including Google Suite and those that use generative AI, without penalty or reprisal, and provide low-tech alternatives

Require explicit parental consent for each app that collects data, per FTC guidelines on COPPA

Prohibit advertising and commercial content on District-issued devices

Disable student access to any generative AI tools, apps, websites, and software on all school-issued devices until this technology has been proven safe, legal, and effective, and until age-appropriate guidelines are established
