In a rare moment of alignment, OUSD’s board, parents and teachers agreed on a new rule — no smartphones during the school day.

A new state law means Oakland Unified must implement a districtwide policy prohibiting student cell phone use by July 1.

Many OUSD schools, especially those in the flatlands, aren’t located where students can easily get to a park or a trail — though an effort is underway by OUSD to transform school yards by adding more trees and green space. But the pandemic prompted a renewed interest in using the outdoors as a classroom.

It’s not a teacher’s job to see the future. It’s our job to teach students that their own brains are beautiful, powerful and useful.

With only a bare bones policy from Oakland Unified School District, educators are on their own figuring out how to incorporate artificial intelligence platforms and keep students from misusing them.
