We are a coalition of parents and educators advocating for school policies grounded in independent research, public accountability and developmentally-appropriate practice.

Schools Beyond Screens - Portland
Who We Are
We are a group of PPS parents, caregivers and educators with a shared vision for tech in PPS that includes a data-driven, intentional, age-appropriate approach to technology in the classroom. Our goal is to advocate for a school district that embraces responsible technology use, centers children's cognitive and social-emotional development, and ensures that any technology adopted serves kids first, with benefits that are clear and evidence-based.
Like the founding chapter of Schools Beyond Screens in LA, we are working closely together with the school board as well as the district to seek out a robust screen and tech policy in PPS. We stand behind Schools Beyond Screens Student Tech Bill of Rights, and are committed to achieving and protecting those rights for every child in Portland Public Schools.

Join the whatsapp group! We are not huge Meta fans, either. However, a lot of parent conversations happen over WhatsApp, and Schools Beyond Screens built their organization using it, so we decided to make it work. If you do not want to use WhatsApp, please sign up via the contact form, and we will strive to keep you in the loop.
Take and share our PPS family survey about tech in our schools! The school board and district reps have let us know that they want to know more about how technology is really being used in the classrooms. We want to gather as many PPS family voices as possible.
Come to school board meetings wearing YELLOW. We picked yellow as our color because it’s warm and cheerful, and we know we’re building a bright future for our kids!
Attend one of Schools Beyond Screens weekly seminars and help US stay in the national conversation. There is a lot of national momentum on these issues, and a lot to keep track of, and we need your help!
Sign up to be a ‘captain’ at your school! Join the WhatsApp group, and let us know that you’d like to captain your school community! That role can be as simple as starting a chat group, or sharing our flyer, or as involved as engaging teachers and administrators at your school on these issues.
