Reforms Needed

Building on the momentum & success of Student Screen Time Policies in other districts, it’s time for GUSD schools to embrace intentional, kid-centered, evidence-based policies around classroom tech.

These include:

Eliminate all device use for TK - 3.

Eliminate 1:1 device use for grades 4 - 8.

Create clear pathways for parents and students

No homework may be required to be completed on a device and/or using the
internet before the high school grades.

Limit videos that can be shown to a class (via projector, smartboard, etc.)

Create a total ban on programs that gamify technology as a means for education.

Disable student access to any generative AI tools, apps, websites, and software
on all school-issued devices.

Students’ personal and behavioral data may not be collected, packaged, sold, or
shared by apps or learning management systems without explicit consent from
parents or guardians.

Eliminate all student-facing digital content that displays or presents
advertisements or commercial content.

Age-appropriate, stand-alone technology education for grades 4-12.
